Living the Life that Matters 101 Weekly Assignment

This week we photographed a subject that is near and dear to me, Books. A good book can create a story, transport you to somewhere new, help you relax, give you a laugh, or make you think. And we had all of those in our winners this week. Our winner though was a shot that reminded us how books can make us laugh with MagdaK’s well read dog. This shot had to be hard to shoot, but even so, ..read more

What is Your Post Production Workflow?

Post-Production-Software

One of the questions I get asked a lot by readers is for a suggested workflow for the post processing of images in Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture (insert your favourite post production software here).

I thought it might make an interesting discussion to invite readers to describe their own workflow for processing images.

For some I suspect it’ll be pretty haphazard and quite different every time, others still will do very little post production while others will have a system that they follow with every ..read more

Now that cameras such as this are nearly commonplace, the decision whether to buy a digicam that shoots HD movies as well as pretty big stills or a camcorder that shoots HD video and stills is a tricky one. Pricewise, it’s also a close race.

Now we have the Olympus SP-800UZ with an enormous 30x optical zoom that equates to a 35 SLR range of 28-840mm and, note, the tele end enjoys an f5.6 aperture. Check out the difference – shooting ..read more

A Guest Post by Lithuanian Photographer Tadas Naujokaitis.

Birds are very interesting creatures, but it’s not so easy to photograph them. Wild birds usually don’t pose where you want and, moreover, it’s often difficult to get close enough to take quality pictures. But if you know some basics of bird photography, it becomes much easier to capture amazing moments of the birds’ life.

Equipment

It’s not necessary to have an expensive camera of lens, however the proper equipment lets to take bird photos ..read more

7 Situations When Manual focus is better than Auto

Auto focus is of unquestionable benefit in a large variety of shooting scenarios, but there are often times when it could actually be wiser to plump for manual focus. In these scenarios, which are outlined below, it is fair to say that autofocus doesn’t perform as well on some cameras, so simply rotate the focus mode selector to M and use the focus ring to sharpen the subject in view. It is also worth remembering that it ..read more

Steady (by ktsdz)Weekly Assignment

This week was we finished up the first of a series of more composition-based assignments with our Dutch Angle Assignment. Dutch angles, also called “Batman Angles” by some, are where the horizon is set at an angle, usually to create a sense of tension or dizziness. Our winner this week really captured that feeling effectively. ktsdz’s shot of the gymnast on the balance beam was crisp, clear, and really fit the assignment because of the tension that it created. ..read more

Over the past year I’ve had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with, and finally meeting in person, a long term world traveler by the name of Gary Arndt. Gary left the USA about three years ago and has been traveling the globe ever since, chronicling his adventures on his wildly popular Everything Everywhere blog.  During his travels his interest and proficiency in photography has grown, in part due to his subscription to Digital Photography School .  With over ..read more

For Beginners – Your Camera Explained in Plain English

Beginner, don’t be dismayed! It can be really easy to understand your camera and how the settings in the exposure triangle work the way they do. This explanation is the way I personally think of my camera as an eye:

The sensor in your camera is the brain. It receives data and information. ISO is how sensitive the ‘eye’ is to the light.  The higher the number, the more sensitive the eye. Aperture is like the pupil. The wider it is (the lower ..read more

100 Ways To Take Better Nature & Wildlife Photographs

Probably one of the most desirable, yet challenging targets for photographers but also the least understood is wildlife photography.

It’s not all that difficult to shoot a simple record of birds and animals in the wild but to succeed in capturing creative, dynamic images … well, that’s another thing!

Author Edwardes admits that the advent of digital cameras has revolutionised his work and aims this book at photographers of all skill levels. The technical requirements he stresses are stringent but he adds ..read more
