Your challenge this weekend is to take and share a photo of you with your camera.
Yep – it’s self portrait time – but we want to not only see you (or part of you – you can have some anonymity if you prefer) but also your prize and joy – your camera (whatever it might be).
To take it you might need to set yourself up in front of a mirror (although I’m sure those of you with two ..read more

Weekly Assignment
This week, we had another kitchen assignment and we wanted to know What’s in your Refrigerator? Sometimes it was scary, sometimes it was funny, but there were a lot of good shots this week. And if there’s one thing that always has the ability to make me smile when tallying up the assignments, it’s that we often get at least one new forum member in the top 3. But this week, all 3 of our winners had less than ..read more

Weekly Assignment
We wanted you to look at things a little differently, and to do that, our assignment was on Low Angles. Getting down close to the ground can give a different perspective to your photo. It might make the subject look more powerful or even more whimsical. Overall, changing your perspective from the usual 5-6 foot vantage point can really help add interest to a photo’s composition. Our winner this week was phillj’s motorcycle rider. This is one of those ..read more

Weekly Assignment
We spiced things up around the forums with our latest assignment, Spice. There were many different ways that spices were used and there were a lot of very creative entries. But we managed to have an easy time picking out the winners this week. Our winner was thebubblybeginner’s “Oh la la” or the smoking chili pepper. This shot was very memorable. The curling smoke enhanced the pepper nicely. Although the hotspot on the pepper was a little distracting, overall, ..read more

Weekly Assignment
We saw a lot of different Fences in this week’s assignment. Fences can be meant to keep things out or keep things in. And although often we try to avoid focusing on fences in photographs, this week we wanted you to show us how you could use them to create an interesting picture. Our winner this week was Steves Shots‘ Cold Winter Morning. The lines lead your eye right through the frame, and the fog and black and white ..read more

A Guest post by Tanya Dyhin.
Light is fundamental to our existence as human beings. Light – electromagnetic radiation, is also fundamental to photography and the creation of the image.
Learning to visually deconstruct light, its qualities, its temperature and direction can help you to better develop your photography skills. As light makes up such a fundamental part of our lives we tend to become used to it as it becomes part our subconscious understanding of the world. To develop your photography ..read more

This weekend your photography challenge is to take and share the best photo that you can – taken with a camera phone.
I know this excludes some of our readers (and to those it does I apologise and suggest taking part in this week’s forum assignment) but most people these days who have a mobile/cell phone tend to have a camera built in.
The cameras in phones are generally not as great as purpose built cameras – but ..read more
How to use Your Tripod (it’s not as simple as you think!)

In this post, Steve Berardi from PhotoNaturalist talks about a few things to consider when setting up your tripod.
When you first got a tripod, you probably thought it was pretty simple: just extend the legs, put the camera on top, and voila! It’s ready to go!
I’ll admit that I definitely thought this way for awhile. But, then I read Ansel Adams’ great book The Camera, where he dedicates two whole pages to proper use of the tripod. He ..read more
5 More Elements of Composition in Photography

Yesterday I shared 5 ingredients of composition that I consider when setting up a shot. Today I’d like to talk about 5 more.
FramingImage by foreversouls
Most of us use ‘frames’ to display our images when we hang them on walls for viewing – however ‘framing’ can be used within the composition of a shot to help you highlight your main point of interest in the image and and/or to put it in context to give the image ‘depth’.
Learn how to use ..read more
