Our last community workshop gave one of our readers some great tips on how to approach photographing a model so I’ve decided to post another reader question. This one is a question I get quite a bit – how do I photograph the birth of a baby?

Here’s the latest question from one of our readers – Drew.

“My wife and I are expecting the birth of our new baby daughter in two weeks time and I’m wondering if you ..read more

Canon-Ef-50Mm-Lens-1

Time for another dPS poll. This one is for DSLR users (which is the vast majority of our readers) and revolves around the type of lenses being used in our community.

Do You Primarily Shoot with Zoom or Prime Lenses?

A quick recap for those not familiar with prime lenses – in short they’re a fixed focal length lens. Of course a zoom lens is one which you can…. well…. zoom. It is generally named with the range of its zoom.

This question arrived in our inbox from a regular reader – Sammy – and I thought it might make an interesting community workshop where you, the readers of dPS, have a go at giving some good tips on how to approach the situation of working with a model for the first time.

Dear dPS. I have long wanted to work in a studio environment with a professional model to test my portrait skills (my kids are completely sick ..read more

Just a quick note to readers to inform you of a few important developments here at dPS over the last few days.

Firstly – we’ve just moved servers. dPS has grown so quickly over the last couple of years that our old servers were increasingly struggling to keep up (and were getting quite expensive to run). So we made the decision to switch (over to Amazon’s system). To do this switch meant a complete reworking of how the site was hosted ..read more

Over at the dPS Facebook page (please do connect with us there) earlier today I asked the following question:

What mistake do you most commonly make or what problem do you most commonly come up against in your photography?

The responses have been great so I thought I’d open it up for discussion here on the blog. Feel free to share your response here in comments below or over on Facebook.

PS: I’m glad I’m not the only one with the problem of ..read more

Pose for Effortlessness

Posing is a subject that stumps quite a lot of photographers. Whether our first or thousandth time working with people, sometimes we just look at our subject and draw a complete blank. It’s a scary moment. There are a number of great articles on some of the basics of posing on dPS already, and I recommend you check them out.

Even with an understanding of the rules of flattering portraiture, I’ve seen plenty of photographers grabbing their subjects and moving them ..read more

Interview with Self Portrait and 365 Photographer – Anna Gay

I first came across the photography of Anna Gay on her Flickr Account when doing some research for a post on self portraiture and the 365 project. I don’t remember which image first grabbed me but do remember surfing through the work in her 365 day challenge archives and being impressed by the quality of her photography, the dedication it must take to take self portraits every day for a year (twice) and being interested to learn more about her ..read more

What Percentage of Our Readers Use a DSLR as their Primary Camera? [Poll Results]

Over the last month or so we ran a poll here on dPS asking readers what type of camera they use as their primary digital camera.

After just on 50,000 responses the results are in – and they’re pretty conclusive – here at dPS people certainly like their DSLRs.

Of course dPS has a fairly ‘enthusiast’ type audience so I wouldn’t claim that this is an accurate reflection of the total percentage of DSLR users going around today – but it certainly ..read more
