Living the Life that Matters 101 Weekly Assignment

This week we photographed a subject that is near and dear to me, Books. A good book can create a story, transport you to somewhere new, help you relax, give you a laugh, or make you think. And we had all of those in our winners this week. Our winner though was a shot that reminded us how books can make us laugh with MagdaK’s well read dog. This shot had to be hard to shoot, but even so, ..read more

Hairy Maggot Blow Flies (Chrysomya)_02Weekly Assignment

This week we got up close with some creepy crawlies in our Bugs or Insects assignment. I have to admit, sometimes it wasn’t too nice looking through the assignment, but there were some amazing details captured. And who realized that bugs were so colorful? Our winners this week were separated by only 1 point, so let me start out by saying well done. The winner though was pedro96’s Fly. This one had some great colours, and the details in ..read more

Static in the EbbWeekly Assignment

This week’s assignment was to capture Motion Blur with People or Animals. We wanted you to try to keep the background steady, but blur people or animals in your shot in order to show movement. Our winner this week was highwayman’s “Static in the Ebb”. This shot was taken at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the static person in the shot really adds to the concept of the movement of the crowd. This shot had an almost cinematic ..read more

1) Camera Settings – Burst mode, Focal Points & Aperture Priority

When shooting any sports, make sure your camera is set to burst/continuous mode to keep up with movements of the players. This will save you having to press the button manually for every shot. Have your camera’s focus mode to AI servo mode which is made to shoot continuous movement & for panning.

Also ensuring all your focal points are active will make sure you have ..read more

1. Trains

The shot of a passenger waiting on a subway platform for a train with moving train behind is always a fun one to experiment with because it contrasts the speed of a train with the stationary passenger (often being buffeted by wind of the train).

These shots are all about making sure your camera is completely still (tripods are key if you can) and anticipating the moment. It’s also about framing your shot so that your ..read more

Pole-Star-Light-Trails

And before those of you in the Southern Hemisphere jump all over the title, with its clear Northern Hemisphere slant, don’t worry, I’ll be talking about the Southern Cross (Crux) as well.  There just wasn’t room in the title to fit in all of that.

Let’s start off with the ‘why’ and then move to the how.  For those of you well versed in astronomy this may all seem very simple to you and you’re welcome to skip right over.  But ..read more

Nikon coolpix S8000.jpg

Compact digicams don’t normally set my bells a-ringing but this one intrigued me, big time.

What on earth is Nikon doing with the Nikon Coolpix S8000? A pocketable picture taker that is just 27mm thin and extends only another 41mm when the stabilised 10x optical zoom pokes its nose into the world. 10x in a compact? Yup.

Then there’s the high megapixel count: 14.2 million of the things, packed into a tiny 11mm CCD. This means its maximum image is 4320×3240 pixels ..read more
